Terri Kennedy's Artist Statement
Louisiana is America’s original melting pot, and I like to incorporate all of Louisiana's culture into my pieces by carving the crumbling brickwork I see around me. My work is reminiscent of the Ol’ French architecture of New Orleans, incorporating the impressionistic style by layering a multitude of glazes, and hand-building flowers native to Louisiana. My work is mainly decorative but functional wheel-thrown earthenware vessels I call "Functional Sculpture.” Pieces are thrown in separate sections, appliquéd, carved and assembled.
My love for clay and sculpting goes back to when I was a child. I would use leftover piecrust clippings and form the pieces into flowers and animals. For the past 20+ years I have turned my love of molding things with clay into a life-long and loving endeavor to make pottery for the everyday world. With all of my processes I strive to merge form with function while encompassing the beauty I see in the Southern Louisiana Culture from my home studio in Denham Springs, Louisiana.
